We are halfway through the first quarter at school and this has been a year of adjustments. Since the princess has found herself in a combination class that includes 5th graders and is taught by the 5th grade teachers there has been some growing up to do. She has been thrown into the "prepare kids for middle school class" and frankly she nor we as parents were ready for this. The bottom line is that she's been given way more responsibility with assignments, classroom work, and homework. No more teachers telling her to write her homework assignments down in her planner, no more weekly e-mails home to parents with a break down of everything my child has learned, is learning, and will learn. (Okay, maybe they weren't quite that thorough, but in the wake of seeing nothing, it sure feels that way.) No more cute little activities to learn spelling words, just a list on Monday and test of Friday.
So, we've found ourselves in a major transition a little bit earlier than we planned. As a former teacher (of middle schoolers) I totally get it. And I'm thankful that the 5th grade teachers work hard to get our kids ready for the big bad middle school across the street. The down side is that the love that the princess has for school seems to be waning a bit. The good news is that when we actually hit the 5th grade we will have hopefully figured out how to handle all the extra responsibility. It's hard to believe that we are already moving toward middle school. We recently had to purchase a new to us car. (Yes, we had to because as Little Man says, Mommy made the car go boom.) As we were searching and talking about what would be best for our family we found ourselves legitimately talking about how this car would more than likely be driven by her. Talk about scary. Time moves to fast these days, sometimes too fast. It's hard to believe that these two are growing so fast.
